Is Democracy for Everyone?

In a recent WashingtonPost.com article, the editors debated the merits of promoting democracy abroad. A strong case was made in "The Case for Democracy" about the need for democracy in developing societies, like Iraq. What do you think?

There is no universal government that is fitted to suit every nation. What Bush must realize is that although we may have the most powerful military in the world, we can not impose American values onto countries which are not willing to accept them. Force is not enough. There must be a majority of the people willing to accept a democracy in a stable society in order for it to work. Hopefully the Iraqi debacle will make the administration realize this so we can spare American lives in the future.
